The shooting took place at around 10:30pm (5:30am GMT) and at least twentry people now are believed to have been killed.
Hundreds of people were seen fleeing the scene and a further 24 are reported to have been wounded.
The incident appears to have happened at the Route 91 festival and police are currently swarming the Las vegas strip
The festival was taking place across the road from the Mandalay Bay hotel which is near the airport on the south side of the Strip.

Las Vegas Police tweeted: “Confirming that one suspect is down. This is an active investigation. Again, please do not head down to the Strip at this time.”
At this time, Las Vegas Police do not believe there is more than one shooter.
Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport temporarily halted flights immediately following the incident.
The airport advised passengers that some flights “will be affected” and delays are to be expected on Twitter.

Flights were being diverted to Phoenix, airports in Las Vegas Ontario, Salt Lake City, Denver and Ontario.
At 8:30am Breaking Flight News posted on Twitter some flights are departing again from Las Vegas Airport – JetBlue flight #B6611 from New York would be the first to arrive.
Limited flight activity has resumed at McCarran Airport, but passengers have been asked to monitor flight statuses with their airline and to expect on going delays.
A Foreign and Commonwealth Office spokesperson has said: “Our sympathies are with all those affected by the horrific shooting in Las Vegas. We are in contact with emergency services and are ready to help however we can.
“Details about the incident are still emerging and we are in contact with Las Vegas emergency services. We are ready to help any British people affected.
“Any British people in Las Vegas should follow the advice of emergency services, and check the Foreign Office travel advice.”

A bomb threat has been issued after the shooting.
Social media users listening in on police scanners are reporting a bomb threat at the Luxor Hotel which is nearby.
A black Audi is said to have been spotted with “wires sticking out”.
The SUV is believed to be located in the hotel car park and people have been urged to avoid the area.
