Where to go on holiday in 2018: The best city breaks and beach holidays revealed

Paris, France

Spring has sprung in the city of love and the French capital is awash with colour: cherry blossoms, daffodils and, for the most part, bluer skies.

Whilst a few showers should be expected, with an average rainfall of 25mm spread over 14 days, April is a great time to visit Paris because temperatures are on the rise and the weather is more enjoyable following the brisk winter.

Average temperatures linger around the 12C mark, however on a good day this can rise to around 17C.

Lisbon, Portugal

Europe is warming up and holidaymakers can expect long and sunny days in Lisbon throughout April.

Pleasant spring temperatures of between 12-20C and fewer crowds make it easier to explore the city’s stunning tiled architecture and steep cobbled streets.

Don’t leave without indulging in a pastel da nat (traditional Portuguese egg tart pastry) at Pastéis de Belém.

Valletta, Malta

Malta’s archipelago, between Sicily and North Africa, boasts some of Europe’s best weather.

The stunning walled city of Valletta is one to visit in 2018, as the newly named European Capital of Europe is not short of spectacular vistas over domes, spires and ships’ masts.

April is an especially good time to go because there’s less rain and warmer temperatures.

Average highs reach 20C during the month, with sea temperatures around 17C.

Longer days mean more time for exploring this European Capital of Culture, with the sun setting just before 7.30pm at the beginning of the month.

Tenerife, Canary Islands

The largest of the Canary Islands, Tenerife, of the coast of West Africa is the perfect April getaway, with average highs of 22C.

With an average sea temperature of 20C, you’ll want to pack your swimming trunks.

Tenerife’s south west coast is home to 26 species of marine wildlife including baleen whales, killer whales and dolphins, making it the perfect spot for some whale watching.

Texas, USA

This huge, southern US state, is known for its diverse landscapes including arid deserts, swimmable coastlines and pine forests.

There’s no shortage of Country culture here either: rodeos, ranches, line-dancing and horse back rides are only some of the activities to do in this vast state.

The cuisine is also legendary, with barbecues and briskets making up some of the favourite southern comforts.

During April, Houston, close to the Gulf of Mexico coast, boasts average temperatures of 21C.

Further inland, state capital Austin has similar temperatures, although less rainy days.

Along the waters of Rio Grande, the sunniest city in Texas throughout April is El Paso which has 11 hours of daily sunshine.

Cowboy capital Dallas in the northeast has highs of 25C during the afternoon.

Or hop on a short ferry and head to Isla Mujeres, which translates to “Island of Women”.

This beautiful island on the Caribbean coast is home to immaculate beaches and friendly locals. Snorkel close up to whale sharks or visit a turtle sanctuary.
